Synopsis

In 100 words

Pariah: How Gaza Broke Israel is a chronicle of witness, silence and reckoning in the world’s first livestreamed genocide. Drawing on more than 550 of Richard Powell’s Gaza reports since 2024, together with eyewitness testimony, government and UN records and Palestinian-created digital archives, it is a forensic record of the destruction of Gaza from October 2023, and of the political, legal and media machinery that allowed it to continue in full view. In five parts it traces the siege and its causes, the October 2023 breach and the information war, the legal reckoning, the geopolitical realignment, and Israel’s collapsing international standing.

In one line

A former foreign correspondent’s 479-page record of the Gaza war and of what it did to Israel’s standing in the West – published in paperback, hardback and eBook, and free to read online.

Talking points

Angles for interviews and features

The first livestreamed war. What it means for the historical record when the evidence is created by the people under bombardment and published in real time – and what the book does with those archives.

The legal reckoning. The legal thresholds in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the ICJ, and what the book’s record adds to them.

Britain’s part. Arms, enabling and silence: the UK material set out in the book’s press release as carried by PA Media.

Journalists as targets. The reporters killed in Gaza set against every conflict since the American Civil War, using the Costs of War figures cited in the book.

Why the book is free. A record written to be read rather than sold, and what that decision has done to its readership.

A correspondent’s view. Twenty years of conflict reporting, from Kosovo to Beirut, and why Gaza was different.
